Opportunities Upon Opportunities Upon Opportunities!

A look at a few local opportunities....

Showdown between Genting monorail, Metromover on track after board backs both for Beach
The article talks about the proposition to build an elevated Metrorail or Metromover across the busy highways linking Miami and Miami Beach in South Florida. There is debate where the funding will come from due to a proposal granted by a Malaysian casino giant Genting. This grant brought up other issues that officials worried about concerning gambling, which is not tolerated by the city of Miami. The vote to move forward with getting the new transportation line up and going was a success. The problem presented in the story is the increased flow of traffic to Miami Beach. Miami Beach is accessed by the causeways, which have only a few lanes at most. Thus, to have more efficient traffic flow, there is a need for new routes of transportation to the notorious island.
The people of Miami are affected by heavy traffic on the daily, anything that may increase overall traffic flow would benefit the people of Miami. Miami is also a heavy tourists city, thus tourists come to Miami to get the absolute best experience, and waiting in traffic is not enjoyable. Everyone who comes to south Florida to visit Miami has this problem. (but they hopefully won't soon!)

6,000 people trapped abroad cruise ship in coronavirus scare, reports say
After symptoms of possible coronavirus diagnoses were expressed by a couple on a Mediterranean cruise, they were kept in isolation until officials could confirm against the virus. There are five cases of the virus thus far in the U.S., but none yet reported in Florida where the cruise left port. The couple had the common flu and the cruise continued its' voyage.
The problem the story presents is chronic infectious disease.
The people who have the problem is the entire world population, because the virus can transfer person to person in a number of different ways.

Texas man convicted of 'deplorable' abuse of 43 dogs gets 84 years probation
Dogs were being held in small soiled kennels, fed moldy food, and given undrinkable or no water at all at a Texas mans discretion. The man, Richard Gonzales, was convicted and charged with 43 counts of animal cruelty; receiving 720 days of probation for each count of animal cruelty. The animals were seized and distributed to better conditions after they were checked by a medical professional.
The problem presented is animal cruelty and abuse. It is easy to acquire an animal as a pet but it is not easy to take good care of that animal for an extended period of time. Humans are granted the ability to take care of other life forms and with that comes responsibility, responsibility that many pet owners do not have, thus animals are in danger every day because they rely on their human owners to take care of them.
The animals hold the weight of the problem on their own lives, but human pet owners hold the responsibility of the problem. Thus, it is us as humans who breed the poor conditions that we bring animals into.

Hate the outdoors? Americans take 1 billion fewer outings than decade ago, report says
The article reflects on a report that looked at a large number of outdoor activities performed by adults. The study expressed only half of U.S. people indulged in an outdoor activity at least one time in 2018. Compared to 2008, Americans took 1 billion fewer outings in 2018, the report says. The article also mentioned children and their 15% less reports of outdoor activity in 2018 compared to 2012. Most people, states the article, go within only 10 miles of their home when participating in outdoor activity. The article urges for a change in order to connect people with the vast benefits of nature.
The problem that is presented is physical activity and biodiversity. People are stuck on their electronic devices, stuck at their jobs and businesses, and stuck on their couches; ultimately missing out on what the world has to offer them.
The people who have this problem are those people who did not participate in even one outdoor activity throughout an entire year.

Processed vs. ultra-processed food: Understanding the difference to make wise food choices
Anything that changes the nature of an agricultural product is a processed food by definition of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. NOVA, a common diet classification system, defines ultra-processed foods as "snacks, drinks, ready meals, and many other products created mostly or entirely from substances extracted or derived from food constituents with little if any intact food." These ultra-processed foods hold little real substance, thus consumers pack a lot of calories per bite and therefore must eat a lot before actually feeling full. These foods lead to health problems and obesity. Research suggests that half the diet of U.S. adults is ultra-processed foods; they are cheap and easy to retain. Nutrients are stripped from these foods and thus the long-term effects of these foods are unknown as of now. The article encourages change in manufacturing to look into how these foods affect people. For now, there are always healthier options to choose from at the grocery store.
The problem is obesity and malnutrition.
The population of people across the U.S., even worldwide, that consume ultra-processed foods as a means of their full meals daily.

  1. Hey Nicole,

The opportunity regarding processed foods hits close to home. As more and more research is conducted, society is realizing how little the amount of nutrition is in our food. There is a huge opportunity to develop affordable nutritious efficient food for consumers. Right now, the issue is that the healthier non processed food is not often in the budget of the average American consumer.

  2. Hey Nicole,
It really is extremely unfortunate that there are people out there today that treat animals so terribly. Ir is also very surprising that the abuse of forty-three dogs only leads to probation. The probation might be very long, which is good, but I'd imagine more of a consequence for committing such an atrocity. Anyways, I enjoyed that your post had such an array of different articles, nice work!
