The Bug List
Look at the world around you...Notice what could be improved in the world through action...Your action, as an entrepreneur...
In order to become a skilled entrepreneur, you must have the ability to seek out and identify the "unmet needs" of others...
Using our skills, together, we will generate a list of bugs where in the future, we will develop and acquire the concept and resources to improve our world.
...The Bug List:
- Movie theater Icee's are crucial for the cinema, but paper straws are disabling us from being able to drink them!
- Why? Since plastic straws are banned in Alachua County, Florida, paper straws are melting in our Icee's instead of melting in our forests.
- My airpods are dead, most likely because I forgot to put them on the charger..
- but, Why else? Because after long hours studying, the last thing I think about is putting my headphones to charge, if only the little light indicating the state of my headphones was on the outside of the case, maybe it would be easier to remember.
- The elevator at my apartment complex on Southwest 5th ave., Savion Park Apartments, is always dirty from trash and spillage.
- Why? The dumpster for the building is across the street from the opposite end of where my unit resides in the building, and the only way to take the heavy trash out is lugging it down the elevator and all the way outside- which is the case for many of the residents of Savion Park Apartments.
- After a long day, more often then not, I come home to a dirty kitchen floor!
- Why? I have four roommates and we often cook meals separately, thus throughout the day due to busy schedules, cleaning up never is at the top of anyones priority list.
- The line to get inside of The Range on Tuesdays is so long people are getting extremely sick from waiting in the cold weather on winter nights.
- Why? Since there are so many people who attend the event they have every Tuesday, it gets too crowded inside and management does not have a quicker way to grant entrance to the large crowds; thus in the winter people end up waiting for up to an hour in the freezing cold without winter weather clothing on - since there is no coat closet at the club like in New York City.
- When my kiwis get too ripe before I get a chance to eat them all.
- Why? Being a college student on a budget, kiwis are often sold in boxes of 12 and it is cheaper to buy in the large pack rather than many individual kiwis, but hard to finish them ALL in the right time period.
- Having to go to the doctor every single month to personally pick up a prescription.
- Why? Highly regulated drugs are required by doctors to have patients pick up their prescription each refill rather than have it automatically refilled at the pharmacy.
- People who are turning left and don't pull up at traffic lights to allow the other cars in the lane to go at the green light!
- Why? People focus on their destination and whether they are following traffic laws or not, thus waiting till they can turn is their priority, unknowingly hindering all the cars behind them who are not turning left.
- There is only one washer and one dryer in an apartment.
- Why? With roommates in college, everyone has to tradeoff using the appliances, so doing laundry takes quadruple the amount of time.
- Losing the key for your apartment and having to leave it unlocked.
- Why? Keys are small and often get lost, making new keys requires time and money; whereas being able to get into your home is a larger priority.
- Never enough scooter parking on campus.
- Why? There simply are just too many scooters and not enough parking spots at the busiest locations.
- Chicken breasts are hard to cook.
- Why? There is always too much fat on the uncooked chicken.
- Laptop computer dying too fast.
- Why? Battery life deteriorates over time with laptop computers, especially with Mac upon a new versions' release.
- Makeup that doesn't last.
- Why? Certain mixtures of substances to make makeup product do not work on every skin type, although companies persuade consumers they do. Therefore, consumers buy the product and realize after that it does not work which leads them to spend more money trying to find the right product - makeup is expensive! (but, you get what you pay for)
- Extra long shoe laces.
- Why? Shoe laces are often a general length. So for people with skinny feet who have to pull the laces as tight as they can in some shoes, the laces get so long they could trip on them!
- Lack of transportation at 8 am on a cold winter morning trying to get to class.
- Why? For college students it is hard to afford a car, Ubering is expensive, all the busses don't start running until later in the day, and the only bus running at that time is half a mile away!
- How expensive it is to get your nails done.
- Why? Nail salons spend very little on supplies, often shipped from china's cheap market, and thus overcharge for labor.
- Starbucks coffee gets cold too fast.
- Why? To withstand from waiting in long lines more than once, students get the large drinks to last them awhile. Although, since the drink comes out at almost perfect temperature to drink, it gets cold within an hour.
- We can buy fruits and vegetables year round from the grocery store.
- Why? Not all fruits and vegetables are in season all year, but the produce section is always full; thus, most of the year we eat unnaturally grown produce.
- Cell phones.
- Why? Since the worlds' people are consumed by their cell phones, they end up becoming a necessity and take up so much of our time, energy, and life. We end up missing out on more than we know because we get stuck communicating through tiny screens.
Coming up with this list is extremely difficult, it requires my ability to think outside of the box in order to see the problems in the world other people struggle with. Even brainstorming my own bugs is difficult because I am not always dealing with the same problems everyday- although I could be, these problems are not every day issues.
Hey Nicole! Nice post, but I had some thoughts regarding a few of the numbers on your bug list. For instance number 15, I actually enjoy having long shoe laces. The reason for this is because I like to look up cool and intricate designs to lace on my shoes. However, on your fifth listed bug, I can heavily relate. I am a guy, living with three other guys, and our kitchen is constantly a mess. I am always cleaning it up, but it just gets dirty by the next day. Very annoying bug extremely relatable.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you on bug #1 Nicole. I get the idea behind paper straws but I feel as if plant based plastic straws are superior, yet they banned them. Paper straws are not durable or practical enough yet to fully take over plastic ones. I also find #13 to be really annoying. I can only get about 4 hours out of my laptop on a good day.
ReplyDeleteHey Nicole! I can totally relate to you on the bug about dirty elevators. I live in a different apartment building but notice the same problem, especially after Friday and Saturday nights due to the students coming back from partying. I feel as though it is largely due to convenience as well; there are no trashcans near any of the elevator landings, so it is no wonder that students resort to just throwing their garbage on the floor of the elevators. I cannot believe that my apartment's management has not made the simple fix of adding such trashcans in the years that I have lived for, considering it would help them avoid cleaning up the messes as well as keep their residents happier. All in all a great blog post!
