An Opportunity hypothesis...
My opportunity...
People in the United States throw away their clothes like they are garbage when they do not fit them anymore or have been ruined in some way because most people do not know what to do with them.
The who: People in the United States
The what: They are throwing their clothes away!
The why: They have no clue what to do with clothes they do not use anymore.
Testing the who: Lots of people have this need, everyone grows out of old clothes, everyone stains or ruins some item of clothing at some time in their life.
Testing the what: Are clothes too much of a want rather than a need where they couldn't hold up an entire industry consisting of old worn down materials? Or are people not going to do anything different because they already have other options and do not use them?
Testing the why: This definitely does not apply to everyone because some people do recycle and refurbish their clothing materials, but others just throw them out where there is good opportunity for them.
Interviewee 1 analysis: This customer suggested that their already are options for recycling clothing and although they exists, she never goes to them because they are picky and more often then not do not take most of her items she brings in. She mentioned having a tradeoff for the old clothes creates an incentive for people to come back and bring back more unwanted tainted clothes. Thus, if money was involved in some way people would be more inclined to keep up a sustainable clothing industry.
Interviewee 2 analysis: This customer mentioned something wrong with the why of the hypothesis, therefore, he said that since not a large enough market exists for such an industry then it may not last and therefore would be a waste in and of itself. He mentioned although it is a great idea, males would most likely not participate unless they had a girlfriend, wife, or friend doing the trading in for them.
Interviewee 3 analysis: This customer loved the idea of a recycling industry for clothes. She mentioned how she never knows what to do with her old clothes and she is awful at sewing. Thus, she said if the company could have a drop off center or even better a shipment service that this idea would skyrocket. She believes all the moms back home would love this idea and would even make it a competition between one another by seeing how much money or how much material they could get from each drop off.
Interviewee 4 analysis: This customer asked me if I personally would use the company, I of course said yes and then she asked me why. This was an interesting interview because it challenged me to brainstorm new directions of explaining why the opportunity exists, such as for people who live in poor rural areas. How would this benefit them? How would this benefit a broader range of customers?
Interviewee 5 analysis: This customer wanted to hear more and more and more, and since this opportunity is not real as of right now I almost had to walk away! She mentioned to me that if this was a commercialized industry their would be a wide range of coverage on news and tv because people use clothes everyday, clothing is essential for everyday life. Therefore, if there was now a nation wide monopoly of recycled sustainable eco friendly clothes... people would go nuts!
